2009 Welcome  Letter

Welcome to everyone, new and old to the Power Paws 4-H Club. I am really excited about this year. We are starting some new projects, have several new kids, even cloverbuds, and I have great expectations for our advanced group. This year the leashes come off and the fun really begins. If you know of anyone who would like to join, please let them know. They need to start ASAP so they are not behind in the class. Remember training dogŐs takes time, the more you practice the better your dogs will be. Of course we will continue with our general knowledge of dogs. We will have a written test at the end of the year again.

Here are my contact numbers, please call if you canŐt make a meeting. We have three groups this year; we need to start each class on time so everyone gets their training time in.

The easiest way reach me is at my shop 7:30 to 5:00 Tues thru Fri, But all three numbers do take a message! Please call if you have any questions or would like some help with your dog during the week. My email address is (contact judy for email info). If you are using one of my dogs and would like to practice during the week call or email me by 7:00 am that morning and I will bring the dog into town.

When you arrive each week for class 1st thing to do is sign in! That way you will get credit for coming and it will make project sheets and record books a breeze at the end of the year. The last class before the 20th of each month we will update our project sheets and make sure our meeting info gets over to Connie and Sharon for the newsletter. Every week you will take home lesson plan for that week. Please practice at least 3 times a week. The more you train the better your dog will become!

This year we will be starting a new project, Flyball. I have been talking to Liz Carter, who runs RF Revolution flyball club in Reno. She has offered to help us start. It will mean a couple of trips to Reno for some clinics, but she has even offered to come up here a few times to work with the group. Her hubby Bill actually lived here, and I believe his father still lives here. Anyway, this is a really fun event, but unfortunately not every dog has the toy drive to be able to compete. Because of this I will buy and make the equipment, no club funds will be uses for this. Since this is not yet a 4H event, adults are welcome to participate also. If we can get good enough I would love to do a demo for the other 4H kids at State Fair. It would be awesome to start teams and compete against other 4h clubs.

On the topic of club funds, I would like permission to use club funds to purchase a set of weave poles and guides, and some PVC to make more jumps. I am drafting a letter to Newmont to request they sponsor our club. As you former members know, the agility contact equipment is very heavy. I would like to get some aluminum equipment that the kids and my arthritic back can handle! It is very expensive, close to 5 thousand for a course. I would like to do some fundraisers in March, bake sale, car wash, even a dog wash? Give me your ideas! The flyball club will pay us for working their shows, Liz said 50 dollars a kid for half a day, 100 dollars for a full. They usually use Reno groups, but she will use us if we want. Sounds good to me and will be great fun for the kids to see the event!

Here is a list of planned events for the year. I am trying to get us some space at the Tri County Fair to do Agility and Obedience Demos. We would be one of the official ŇactsÓ. If this happens maybe we can also do our county show there. I donŐt want to take up all your time; I know everyone has other things going also. Any other ideas of events, please letŐs talk!

Flyball show-Fundraiser, May 16 and 17

Flyball show-Fundraiser July 18 and 19

Last but not least, I would like to bring a Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy raising club to Winnemucca. This is a major whole family commitment. The 4H kids will get their 4h credit for raising the puppies, but it would be open to anyone in the community to raise a puppy. We would also need part time puppy sitters that would take the puppy for a short time, it their regular puppy raiser needs to go out of town etc.

Just want to finish with a big thank you to all you kids and parents for working and helping this last year. Mrs. Pasquale you did an awesome job as announcer at our local show, you are officially nominated for our next show and hopefully the Aug. 8th Winnemucca Dog Fair! I have talked KateŐs mom into helping out, and my daughter in law Ammy, Janneanne, and my son Tim will hopefully get their leader status and help out also. Thanks to all you parents that took time off to get your kids down to State fair and spending a couple of long days there! I am very proud of how everyone did. I know you all impressed the judge and the Reno clubs! At this point we are the largest and best club attending, and I would love to see everyone attend again.

Your leader,

Judy Henigin
